Normalising
Most patch panels are supplied with all sockets isolated (not normalised). In this case, the only internal linking is between the front sockets and rear terminations. Normalising is a means of establishing a connection between top and bottom sockets without a patch lead. This is useful when sockets which are normally connected together, such as mixer insert points, are brought up to a patch panel. There are two methods of normalising in common use: half normalising (or semi-normalising) and full normalising. When a pair of sockets is half normalised (sometimes called 'sniff and break'), the link between them is broken only when a plug is inserted into the bottom socket. The top socket can be plugged into without breaking the link. If a pair of sockets is fully normalised, the link is broken when a plug is inserted into either the top or the bottom socket.
